Joe Biden wins presidential election; Kamala Harris makes history

Following a tense week of vote tallying, Joe Biden won the state of Pennsylvania and vaulted ahead in the race to become the next president of the United States. Biden’s win in this battleground state placed him over the threshold of 270 electoral votes.

“In the face of unprecedented obstacles, a record number of Americans voted, proving once again that democracy beats deep in the heart of America,” Biden said in a statement after the result was called on Saturday, exactly 48 years after he was first elected to the US Senate.

Former California senator Kamala Harris makes history by being the first elected Black and Asian American woman to become Vice President of the United States. Harris’ triumph marks a new high point in a career of barrier-breaking accomplishments, from San Francisco district attorney to California attorney general to just the second-ever Black female US senator.
