Assault on U.S. Capitol

Hundreds of pro-Trump protesters pushed through barriers set up along the perimeter of the Capitol, where they tussled with officers in full riot gear, some calling the officers “traitors” for doing their jobs.

A violent mob has breached the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. forcing the evacuation of the Senate as lawmakers counted electoral votes to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the November election.

The angry mob clashed with police, climbed walls and broke windows and doors at the Capitol Building. A number of individuals had breached the Senate Chamber as police officers drew their weapons. The nation’s capital is under curfew tonight as a result of the violence.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said lawmakers would return to the Capitol to finish the counting of votes. Pelosi said the assault on the Capitol cannot “deter us from our responsibility.”
