Snapshot of an HCC class

People at Honolulu Community College come from all over the world, and they plan to many different things when they graduate.

In just one English 100 class, for instance, you can find a very interesting variety of people from Hawaii, the Mainland and even overseas. They range in age from 18 to 32, and just about everyone has an interesting career planned.

The students come from many places.  Locally, students have lived in places like Wahiawa, Ewa Beach, Kailua, Nanakuli, Kalihi, and The Big Island. We also have students from Ohio, New York, California and even China.

They have a lot of different interests beyond the classroom and work.   Some just like to chill out listening to music, watching TV, or playing video games. Others like to be more active, playing soccer, volleyball and other sports or getting out into the water on a surfboard or bodyboard.

You might be surprised to know that almost a quarter of our class (five people) is interested in being firefighters some day. Others want to go into marketing, cosmetology, nursing, architectural drafting or the music industry. Some are still trying to figure out what they want to be.

So that’s why I love HCC.  It might seem like a simple required English writing class, but you never know what kind of interesting people you are going to meet in it.
