Honolulu CC’s 25th Star Awards Ceremony was held in Harbor View Center in Nico’s Pier 38 on April 25. It was the first time that HonCC organized the Star Awards into a formal attire dinner banquet.
More than 120 students were nominated for awards. Every nominees could bring one guest to the banquet. With more than 100 students, professors and guest attending, the banquet started at 7 p.m.
Student Life & Development Director Emily Kukulies had a welcome address and introduced the Event Coordinator Noahlani Fata. She thanked all participants. Chancellor Erika Lacro, who was host of the banquet, also gave an address to praise the preparations for the event.
ASUH-HCC, the student government of HCC, had its traditional handing over of the gavel to the new-elected administration during the banquet. The student government has the tradition to handover and oath-taking ceremony during the Star Awards Ceremony.
In the ceremony, the old administration passed student senate’s gavel to Chancellor Lacro, symbolizing the end of this term’s student government. And new administration took the oath to take the responsibility of student body and received the gavel from the Chancellor.
New Student Government President Gerimi Tangonan had a speech after the handover ceremony. He said the former administration did a good job and he will make the ASUH stronger.
“I’m proud with him,” said Kaleo Gagne, retiring ASUH president. He was smiling and tearing when Tangonan gave his speech. He said he is glad to finish the job and have a good team to continue works. Actually, the new administration will not take over the student government entirely before May 16, the last day of this semester.
By the end of the banquet, Chancellor Lacro announced every awardee’s name. Nominees from different departments, student services and clubs received their award certificate.
Event Coordinator Fata said it is the first time that SLD hold the event in formal banquet and is successful. They will plan to host the banquet again next year.
