Gathering held for the slain Jason Oliveros

Chiechi said that Oliveros’s young age is why she was moved by the ceremony, and that she had friends of her own who died similarly young.

“He was only 20,” Chiechi said of Oliveros, “He’ll never know what it’s like to be 21.”

Officials say Jason Oliveros, who last attended Honolulu Community College in the fall semester, was found by police about 3 a.m. near Halona and Houghtailing streets in Kalihi with several stab wounds.

He was pronounced dead about 40 minutes later.

Witnesses told police that they had earlier seen three men chasing Oliveros through the streets, and a 21-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with his murder.

Several friends said they had seen Oliveros on campus visiting with friends on the day before he died.

Be the Change day is here

Tuesday, April 9, is Be the Change Day on the HCC campus.

The event will be hosted between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the Campus Mall with various organizations sharing ideas to help ourselves and community. There will be crafts, garden kits, and prize drawings.

The ECE club will be selling pizza at $2 a slice during event.

ASUH election deadlines set

Elections for student leaders at HonCC will be held April 15-18, student leaders have announced.

Positions available include president, vice president, communications director and senator at large.

Students interested in running can pick up applications from the ASUH-HCC office or the Student Life and Development office, both on the ground floor of building 2.

Applications are due March 21.

Same workout, new time

The time for the weekly Boot Camp workouts on campus has been changed.

The weekly sessions will now be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the grassy area between Building 2 and Keiki Hau’oli Children’s Center. New participants are welcome.

Some things to bring to the workout are:

a large towel (i.e. beach towel)
comfortable clothing & active footwear
a positive and fun attitude!

Senate OKs funds for honor society

The student Senate on Monday approved funds to help one student organization but told another one to return in two weeks with a scaled-down proposal.

Members of the ASUH-HCC voted 11-0, with four abstentions, to approve $763 in student funds to help Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society, send at least one student to a national convention later this spring. The group had originally requested $1,145.50.

A member of the group said it would try other fund-raising initiatives to make up the difference.

Student leaders, however, turned down a request for $2,000 in student funds to be used to help the Communication Arts students put on their annual portfolio event. Student senators questioned the amount of the request and told the Communication Arts group to return with a lower proposal in time for the next meeting in two weeks.

Senators indicated they were concerned with giving large amounts to groups on campus when the proposals did not benefit the student body as a whole.

Great Aloha Run next month

This year, a total record 72 HCC students was sponsored by faculty, staff administrators, family and friends that joined to support the Great Aloha Run.

The Great Aloha Run is an eight-mile foot race that begins at Aloha Tower and finishes in Aloha Statdium. It is held every year on Presidents’ Day.

Thousand of people participate in the Great Aloha Run every year
